Welcome to Hyosung’s employee spotlight! Our February Spotlight is on Sharon Shaw, Senior Director of Marketing.
Get to know about Sharon below!
Q: How long have you worked at Hyosung?
A: About 4-1/2 years – started in September 2019
Q: Can you tell us a little more about your background and how you joined the company in 2019?
A: I was employed by IBM for almost 30 years in a variety of positions joining as a UNIX systems engineer, large account sales, channel sales and then about 20 years in marketing. I joined the Hyosung in 2019 to renew the focus on marketing and build the Hyosung brand in the market.
Q: What was your first impression of Hyosung?
A: Well, when I was interviewing I took a look at the company website at the time and saw plenty of opportunity for marketing to improve the brand’s look in the market. Hyosung had an outdated brand, little marketing material, and little brand consistency and was in a general need of marketing attention.
After joining Hyosung, I immediately recognized the people. They all want to contribute to the company’s performance. Everyone was willing to answer my questions and team with me. I cannot recall a time someone has said no or was not willing to go above and beyond to help me.
Q: Are there any important skills or attributes that are important for someone that wants to pursue a career as Senior Director of Marketing? Is there anything about your job or your team that you think people outside would find surprising or different in the way you/it works?
A: I find the most important skills in marketing are communication and problem solving. Marketing is all about understanding what needs to be accomplished, developing a plan, pulling together a team and executing. Throughout this, communication to the stakeholders and team is crucial to keep everyone up to date.
Q: Can you tell us about your role and summarize your day-to-day responsibilities?
A: As the Senior Director of Marketing I am responsible for all of the marketing and communications for the company. This includes everything from the corporate website, social media, advertising, brochures, events, press releases, channel communications, videos, product launches, brand oversight, managing the Customer Experience Center and customer visits, PartnerPortal and more. If it has our brand on it, it probably came through marketing.
Q: What inspires you every day?
A: New challenges inspire me. One thing about marketing is that no two days are the same. There are always new ideas from the executives, employees or channel partners that we get to be a part of. I love taking an idea in someone’s head and using my experience and skills to develop it into something that contributes to the company’s progress and success. I like to reflect at the end of each year on what I personally contributed to the company and what would not have happened if it were not for my efforts.
Q: In 5 years what do you want to achieve or where do you see you yourself?
A: In 5 years, I hope to enjoy the success of Hyosung Innovue that we have all contributed to.
Q: What do you like to do outside of work?
A: I am an avid power walker. I walk 3-4 miles, 5 days a week. It is a great stress reliever and exercise that I can work in where ever I am traveling, and at any part of the day. I have been power walking for over 30 years now. I figure I have logged well over 30,000 miles. The earth is about 24,900 miles around, so I am on my second lap.
Q: Do you have favorite memory or standout accomplishment during your time at Hyosung?
A: I have had the opportunity to lead several large projects for the company: the new Customer Experience Center in 2020, the new company website in 2020-21, and the Hyosung Innovue rebrand and new brand launch in 2022-23. Each of these projects was the opportunity to help Hyosung grow and evolve the brand, in addition to allowing me to continue to learn and grow my skills.
